Non-castrated young males not suitable for breeding and geldings (castrated males older than 2 years) are an inexpensive alternative to breeding stock.

Even experienced owners cannot distinguish between females and males on first view at some distance. To determine sex, a careful exam is necessary.

In other words, if you want to fill your view with colourful, woolly alpacas at a very reasonable cost, pet males and geldings is the way to go!
 
Because we have such a large herd from which only a few are chosen to become sires, we always have plenty of pet-quality males for you to select from. An all-male herd with no females in sight or scent range is a peaceful society with no management problems.

We advise against introducing geldings or young males into a herd with a breeding male, or purchasing bottle-raised males who have not been properly socialized. Unless raised by an expert, bottle-fed babies may become unpleasant and aggressive ('berserk') when mature, even toward humans. For medical reasons, males should not be castrated before 18 months of age.
